Yunnan guide
Three days is enough for Kunming if you plan one big trip and one relaxed day. This is how we would sequence it.
Land in the morning if you can, and stay near Green Lake Park or the old city so day 1 needs no transport at all. Walk Green Lake Park slowly, take a late lunch of crossing-the-bridge noodles, then cross to the Yunnan Provincial Museum, which is free and sets up the province for you.
Finish at the Yunnan Ethnic Village in the late afternoon, when the folk performances are running and the light is good, then eat at Kunming Old Street or Nanping Street. Nothing here needs a booking, so keep the day flexible and leave room to get lost.
The one long day. Leave around 8:00 for the 90 km drive east and be at the gates when they open, because the first hour is the quietest and the light is best.
Do the Greater Stone Forest first, take the shuttle to the Lesser Stone Forest, and be back in Kunming by early evening. If the weather is poor, swap this for the Western Hills and the Dragon Gate grotto, which works fine in the rain and still fills a day.
Spend the morning at Dianchi. Between November and March the Haigeng wetland is full of gulls and the boardwalk at Caoyun is quiet and worth the taxi. Outside bird season it is still a wide, flat lake with the Western Hills across the water, which is its own kind of view.
Back in town, go to Zhuanxin farmers market for lunch, browse the flower market, and leave the afternoon for the Western Hills if you did not get there on day 2. Finish with a bowl of noodles near the station.
